Team Retreat & Team Workations on the Canary Islands

The islands of perpetual spring. On the Canary Islands you will not only find incredible nature, but also a lively and active international co-working scene. It’s no wonder that the Canary Islands are always on the top lists for workations worldwide. Perfect for a team retreat in the Canary Islands.

Reachable from Europe in about 4-5 hours by plane, they are the perfect winter getaway and even in summer the temperatures are perfect for productive work and outdoor adventure and relaxation.

In this guide for your team retreat on the Canary Islands, we introduce you to our top locations and give you helpful tips on organizing a team workation or team retreat on the Canary Islands.

Which island to choose for a team retreat in the Canary Islands?

All the Canary Islands have their own charm. Tenerife has the most going on, where a special volcanic landscape in the center of the island meets partly sandy beaches and hidden bays. Especially recommended for workations: Puerto de la Cruz on the north side of the island. It is particularly green here and you have a more varied climate and many outdoor opportunities. There are the most flights to Tenerife.

Gran Canaria is more than just the famous sand dunes of Maspalomas. Small fishing villages and breathtaking nature will cast a spell over you. We particularly like the region around Puerto de los Nieves because of its unspoiled nature and very special location. Gran Canaria is also easy to reach with many direct connections.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are traditionally more suitable for beach lovers or racing cyclists. Less mountainous, but very sunny and sandy beaches can be found there.

And if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle, be sure to check outLa Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. Here, however, you will have to accept a slightly longer (or more expensive) journey.

Locations for workations and retreats

Team Retreat House on Gran Canaria

The house is uniquely located in the beautiful fishing village of ‘Puerto de las Nieves’ on Gran Canaria’s northwest coast.

The accommodation on Gran Canaria with adjoining co-working space specializes in workations and team retreats. Up to 50 people can be accommodated in 31 bedrooms with separate beds and exclusive booking of the house is possible for groups of 15 or more.

A popular area for working is the roof terrace: it has several tables and chairs and offers around 20 people a workspace with a unique view of the sea and the mountains. You can also use a separate coworking space 250 meters away right by the sea. There is space for around 28 people in the open coworking area, 12 people in the meeting room and around 20 on the terrace.

Interview with Christian about team retreats in the Canary Islands

It’s best to ask a real Canario about their experience with team retreats in the Canary Islands. Christian Buss gave us his best tips for Gran Canaria in an interview and shares the special concept of repeople – an organization that brings teams together in co-living, co-working and retreat spaces on the Canary Islands.

How can I imagine a team retreat on the Canary Islands?

“If you organize a team offsite with repeople at El Cabo Coliving, then you’ve actually chosen the ideal location, as pretty much anything is possible with us:

  • Work focused, productively and efficiently and hold team meetings in an inspiring environment with super-fast WiFi? Absolutely – our coliving and coworking are specially designed for retreats.
  • Getting closer as a team by sharing unforgettable moments together? We are happy to help with the organization of authentic Canarian team building activities and local excursions.
  • Enjoy your free time in nature? There are probably few places where swimming in the sea with a fantastic coastal backdrop and hiking in the breathtaking mountains are so easy to combine, as they are ‘right on our doorstep’.”

What are your tips for organizing the journey to Gran Canaria with larger teams?

The earlier you start organizing, the easier it is to find the cheapest flights. The airports of Gran Canaria and Tenerife fortunately have direct connections with many European and intercontinental airports.

“It never hurts to be flexible when it comes to travel – what works really well is to set the core dates when the company offsite takes place, but then allow the individual team members to arrive earlier and/or leave later so that they can make the most of their stay in Gran Canaria (and perhaps the long journey).”

Use providers such as Google Flights to find the most sensible option for your team. Include other departure airports in your vicinity.

How much does a team retreat in the Canary Islands cost?

Prices vary greatly depending on the type of accommodation and season. We want to give you an example and therefore ask Christian:

“For a team of 25 people, El Cabo Coliving can be booked exclusively from €15,000 for a week – the coworking is already included in the price, and everyone in the team has their own bedroom and bathroom. In addition, we sometimes offer exclusive offers at meetreet for certain months, which are even more tempting. It is also possible to book individual rooms, with rates starting from €60 per night.”

At meetreet you get an exclusive offer for El Cabo:

From April to July 2024 you only pay €12,500 for 7 days

In addition, there are costs for travel (200 – 400€ p.p.), meals on site (20 – 150€ p.p/day) and activities.

How do you live sustainable tourism?

Of course, a flight with the whole team is not the most sustainable way to spend a workation. It is therefore best not to travel for just a few days, but for at least a week. We would also like you to make a sustainable choice of location on site.

Christian from El Cabo is a good example of this:

“Sustainability has been an important issue for us since repeople was founded, and one that is very close to our hearts. On the one hand, we always strive to keep our local carbon footprint as low as possible. We do this very well at El Cabo Coliving, as we have had a solar system installed on the roof since 2023, which supplies the building with 100% electricity during the day. And since we don’t need heating in the Canary Islands and almost never need air conditioning, our customers’ carbon footprint during their stay with us is definitely much lower than at home.

On the other hand, we are strongly committed to socially just tourism that benefits the local population. For example, we work almost exclusively with small local family businesses, both in Agaete and in the valley and surrounding villages. We support young people in the rural regions of Gran Canaria – for example, we often visit local schools and high schools, sometimes in collaboration with remote workers from our community, to introduce the students to interesting training and job opportunities that can also be learned and practiced from the Canary Islands. We also encourage meetings and the exchange of ideas between local and international small businesses and freelancers – we are developing our coworkings in both Agaete and Las Palmas into “knowledge centers” that host many events and are therefore accessible to everyone.”

Conclusion on team retreats in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are the perfect winter escape for teams looking for new inspiration in nature and a community of other digital nomads and teams.

The easy journey, short time difference and, above all, the special accommodations with their exceptional hosts make the experience perfect.

We will be happy to help you find the perfect location for your team on the Canary Islands.
